A Maryland woman was taken into custody this week at Sanford-Orlando International Airport following an alleged assault on a child during a flight returning from Disney World over Memorial Day weekend.
Kristy Crampton, 47, of Hagerstown, Maryland, faces two counts of third-degree cruelty toward a child and abuse causing great bodily harm, according to court documents.
Authorities say the incident began after the boy reportedly made derogatory remarks about Crampton’s weight, including “Miss Piggy” jokes. The situation escalated when Crampton allegedly struck the child multiple times, including using a water bottle and reportedly pressing his head against an airplane window as the boy tried to shield himself.
The pilot reportedly intervened to stop the assault.
According to a report by WFTV, Crampton told police she snapped after the boy behaved “rude and disrespectful” and pushed her arm off the armrest during the flight.
Crampton was arrested at the airport gate and subsequently released on a $10,000 bond following her initial court appearance on May 27. A judge has ordered her to have no contact with the child involved.
Details about the relationship between Crampton and the child have not been disclosed. Her arraignment is scheduled for July 1 in Sanford, Florida.
