Nigerian artist Speed Darlington has responded to the ongoing investigation by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) following a viral video in which he appeared to claim an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The video, now deleted, sparked widespread outrage and prompted NAPTIP to summon the musician on two occasions.
After missing initial appointments on May 28 and June 2, Speed Darlington, through his legal representatives, has described the controversial video as “a bad joke” made purely for entertainment and publicity purposes. He has committed to appearing before the agency on June 26 to address the allegations.
The video’s content raised serious concerns about possible violations of Nigeria’s anti-trafficking and cybercrime laws. NAPTIP has indicated that it will thoroughly investigate the matter to determine if any criminal conduct occurred.
Public reactions have largely been critical, with many viewing the artist’s explanation as an attempt at damage control rather than genuine remorse.
This case highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and accountability, particularly when it involves public figures and sensitive issues such as child protection. NAPTIP’s forthcoming actions may set an important precedent regarding the legal consequences of inappropriate statements made in the name of “dark humor.”
