A 48-year-old passenger traveling to Cebu was apprehended at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 after allegedly making a bomb joke aboard a commercial flight, authorities confirmed.
The Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEG) reported that the incident occurred last Sunday. According to the statement, the passenger made a remark implying the presence of a grenade in his bag while it was being placed in the overhead compartment.
“A cabin crew member immediately notified airline and airport security personnel,” said PNP AVSEG.
Following established protocols, the aircraft was isolated and subjected to comprehensive bomb detection procedures. No explosives or hazardous materials were discovered, and the flight was subsequently cleared for departure.
The suspect was detained by NAIA Police Station 3 and is currently undergoing further legal processing.
Authorities remind travelers that bomb jokes are strictly prohibited under Presidential Decree No. 1727, which criminalizes the malicious dissemination of false information or threats concerning bombs, explosives, or similar destructive devices.
