Robert De Niro has embraced a recent viral social media trend, catching acclaimed director Martin Scorsese off guard with a humorous late-night phone call.
The legendary actor joined the popular “goodnight call” trend by ringing Scorsese to exchange casual bedtime greetings in a video captured by onlookers near both men.
In the clip, Scorsese answers the phone to hear De Niro say, “I’m calling to say goodnight,” followed by a friendly “sleep tight.” De Niro then FaceTimes Scorsese to show he was watching a children’s television program. The pair ended their brief conversation by confirming plans to see each other the following day.
Afterwards, Scorsese shared his bemusement about the call. “No, he calls four times and then you finally realize it’s him, and then he goes, ‘How are you doing? I’ll see you tomorrow,’” Scorsese said. “The whole thing is a big mystery.”
The playful exchange between these longtime collaborators quickly gained traction on social media, eliciting laughter from fans. However, not everyone found it amusing. Director Boots Riley responded skeptically, writing, “This is funny? Ok.”
De Niro and Scorsese are part of a growing roster of celebrities taking part in the TikTok-driven trend where men call their male friends to wish them goodnight, often eliciting confused or surprised reactions.
In a related viral moment, radio host Big Boy shared videos of him calling rappers Xzibit, O.T. Genasis, and Top Dawg Entertainment’s Top. The artists responded with a mix of surprise and humor. O.T. Genasis laughed, “Man, you don’t call no [expletive] phone and say that.” Xzibit replied, “Alright, good night Big,” while Top jokingly told Big Boy to direct such messages to a woman, teasing, “Good night? You need to be calling your side piece to tell her goodnight.”
Earlier, social media personality Jake Paul went viral for a similar prank call to streamer Adin Ross, who expressed disbelief: “No way you just called me to say goodnight.”
This lighthearted trend showcases a new way celebrities are engaging with each other and their audiences through humor and social media culture.
